Last summer, I had the most wonderful opportunity to stay at Hatch House Bed and Breakfast in Towanda, Pennsylvania. When I say MOST WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY I absolutely mean it.

Red brick house with two story white porches, and lots of greenery in the yard.

My stay was hosted, part of a work trip, but I keep talking about it like I just got back. It was last August, y’all. I still can’t get it out of my head.

You know a place is special when it sticks for months in your mind — and the warm feelings linger in your heart.

So, let me tell you about it… and then, if you find yourself headed toward central Pennsylvania, make a detour to stay for awhile. Or, if you need a truly relaxing, pampered getaway that won’t break the bank, schedule a stay here. You’ll LOVE it! I can almost guarantee it. (I don’t offer guarantees, but if I did, this would be a safe one.)

Okay, enough gushing…

Hatch House Bed and Breakfast

Hatch House Bed and Breakfast opened in 2019, but the house itself dates back to 1888, a Victorian Era beauty in the heart of historic Towanda, Pennsylvania. The home’s ornate arches, stained glass windows, and wide, airy porches are welcoming. From the moment you step through the front door, the carefully preserved historic details give a sense of time.

And, the modern casual elegance provides a comfortable space to kick off your shoes and relax. Whether sitting in the front room and gazing out over the tree lined street or sitting out back under the stars, every space at this property is inviting and cozy without being cramped or stuffy.

When I travel for work, I rarely unwind with a one night stay. But at Hatch House, I almost forgot I wasn’t visiting with friends. It’s just that welcoming.

Rooms at Hatch House Bed and Breakfast

Hatch House has three suites, each with a private, well-appointed bathroom, comfortable bed and well-appointed amenities.

During our visit, I learned a few fun facts about the house (and its owners).

For instance, the bathroom in the Sullivan Room is a brighter blue than other suite spaces throughout the house. The owners planned to update the bathroom, but friends and regular guests have demanded they leave it as is. I saw the bathroom. It’s beautiful. This room is located at the back of the house, overlooking the pool and barns.

The Tracy Room, named to honor the original owners of the house, can be rented as a room to sleep two or as a suite, sleeping up to six, making it a family friendly option. The soft colors of this room with its access to the upper porch makes it a spectacular retreat getaway in the trees.

The Bradford Room, where I stayed, was named after a former chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. I don’t think the owners know I used to be a lawyer, but I chuckled when I learned the room’s naming inspiration. This room is cozy, located right at the top of the stairs and has a queen bed, not a king bed as the other suites do. I promise, it’s such a comfortable bed, you’ll never notice! I slept like a baby!

Amenities like water, soaps, shampoos, an easy to access bedside charging block, comfortable chairs and a refrigerator add the the comfort of each suite.

Though, I think it’s the little details, like the coziness and soft, beautiful decor that’s not overdone, that make it feel special.

Breakfast at Hatch House

Before retiring for the evening, Roger and Michelle arranged our breakfast time. As we wandered into the kitchen, the coffee was ready. Fruit and other light foods were waiting for us. And, Michelle made breakfast eggs, bacon and sausage to order for our little troupe. We ate in the cozy kitchen, at a comfy banquette that overlooks the room and spaces in the back yard. We had to force ourselves to move on as the workday waited.

I enjoyed the morning so much, I forgot to take photos of breakfast. If you know me, you know (a) I’m not a morning person and (b) I always take photos of my food. Michelle just has that inviting of a home.

Other Spaces at Hatch House

Perhaps what makes Hatch House special, besides Roger and Michelle, is the abundance of space to relax and unwind. There’s an inground pool behind the house with loungers in the sun and in the shade.

The back patio and fire pit is actually surrounded by the remnants of three walls of the old ice house. Sitting cozy and tucked in with the fire pit going, the edison bulbs glowing and a glass of wine sure is a spectacular way to wrap up the day. Hidden away from the world, we just soaked in the beauty all around.

Roger took time to share some of the unique features of the home, at my inquiry. Both he and Michelle were happy to answer our questions, available but not pushy.

They offer a variety of add-ons to make your stay more special. Partnering with other local businesses, you can enjoy a wine tasting, cidery tour or kayaking adventure on the river. Enjoy the local specialties while staying at a historic home. Doesn’t that sound amazing.

While in Towanda, please consider taking a walk through town to discover the rich architectural history of this historic town. It’s a beauty!

Plan your visit to Hatch House

Hatch House Bed and Breakfast is located at 101 York Avenue, Towanda, Pennsylvania, not too far from Corning, New York. It’s about a 4.5 hour drive from Pittsburgh, 3.5 hours from Philadelphia and 3 hours from Albany, New York. But, it’s a million miles from the stress, hustle and bustle of the world. Priceless.

As we celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026, Hatch House and Towanda would be a great spot for a nostalgic, homey stay. Roger and Michelle say, “Where our home is your home,” and they mean it.

Honestly, my home only aspires to be this welcoming. It’s a beautiful, comfortable, approachable property run by lovely owners who care about every detail of your stay.

For a couples’ getaway or girlfriend recharge, I can think of no place better to go.

Book directly with Hatch House to get the best rate. If you have VRBO credits or other discount booking rewards, it might be something to consider. But, you’ll get the best rates booking direct.

The house was built in 1888 and rooms are not wheelchair accessible.

If (when) you go, please tell Roger and Michelle I say hello. I hope to visit again soon.
